An immersive winter festival celebrating the world’s most popular instrument.

The Adelaide Guitar Festival (AGF) (formerly the Adelaide International Guitar Festival)  is a four-day biennial festival, curated by internationally renowned Australian guitarist, Slava Grigoryan. Unbound by genre and acclaimed for its outstanding quality, its concerts span rock, jazz, folk, classical, experimental, blues and roots music.

The inaugural festival in 2007 was modelled on the New York Guitar Festival and saw 100 musicians from around the world perform across 40 events, and attracted an audience of over 30,000 people.

In 2009, Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier, together with AGF Artistic Director, Slava Grigoryan, announced the festival would become a biennial event.

The Festival is the most significant of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2014 it announced a new partnership with Spain’s Córdoba Guitar Festival. This exciting development has seen ongoing exchange of guitarists between the festivals, and in 2016 has extended to include the Seville Guitar Festival.

Adelaide Guitar Festival has continued to build on previous programs and expand in to new territory. In addition to the main event (9 – 12 August, 2018), the Adelaide Guitar Festival presents:

  • Guitars In Bars, 13–29 July 2018 – an open-access program celebrating the Adelaide music scene
  • Adelaide Guitar Festival Winter School, 16–20 July 2018 – invites guitarists to participate in a week of intensive, immersive classical guitar playing and skills development with highly respected national and international guitar teachers.
  • Resonance, 28 July – 10 August 2018 – Understanding how music can play a role in health, well-being, and recovery, the Resonance program will deliver outstanding musicians for intimate performances at hospitals, aged care facilities and community centres across metro and (outer metro or greater) Adelaide.
  • Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition – The most prestigious guitar competition in the southern hemisphere with emerging guitarists from around the world playing for $32, 000 worth of prizes.
Under the guiding hand of Slava Grigoryan, the Adelaide International Guitar Festival has acquired a stature and credibility that genuinely puts it on the world map The Australian

Adelaide Guitar Festival is proud to celebrate Adelaide’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music!

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge this is the traditional land of the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.
