Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2018 Adelaide Guitar Festival was one of the most successful yet, reaching its Box Office target with the highest ticket sales since 2012.
The four day festival, which ran from August 9 until August 12, featured 19 international artists, five world premieres, two Australian and four Adelaide premieres.
It’s estimated the overall attendance including masterclasses, artist talks and Guitars in Bars, reached more than 32,000 and resulted in four sold out shows – Tommy Emmanuel and Friends, Pedro Javier Gonzalez and Chrystian Dozza, The Turner Brown Band and Abbe May + Clam Jam.
Adelaide Guitar Festival Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan said this year’s program provided something for everyone. “From international headliners like Tommy Emmanuel, Albert Lee, Kaki King and Pedro Javier Gonzalez, to local musicians such as Kelly Menhennett and The Family Bushdance, the talent on show was extraordinary,” he said.
“We offered a range of free events, including gigs in Twelve Bar in the evenings, Guitar Expo, and the Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition, which was won by Victorian, Miles Johnston.”
Nearly 1000 artists were involved in this year’s festival.
Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier said the diversity, reach and accessibility of the Guitar Festival programs further contributed to Adelaide’s status as a UNESCO City of Music.
“Our Guitars in Bars program in July was bigger and better than ever, producing more than 220 gigs across South Australia, a 38 per cent increase on the previous year. The venues ranged from houseboats to pubs to a florist shop,” he said.
“Our Winter School program attracted more than 80 participants and Resonance expanded into regional areas, taking world class music to 22 venues and reaching approximately 1500 people in nursing homes, a hospital and community centres.
“I’m incredibly proud of this festival and thank the wonderful audience and everyone involved for their support in making 2018 a success.”
